Since 1986, Platte River Power has taken part in an annual December National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count at the Rawhide Energy Station site. From 1986 through 2007, Dr. Ronald A. Ryder, Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Biology, Colorado State University, conducted a study of bird populations using the Rawhide Energy Station site. See his Ryder Reports.
