Rawhide Energy Station
Rawhide is ranked as one of the cleanest power plants in the nation. Every other day a 60-car train delivers low-sulfur coal from the Powder River Basin coal fields in north central Wyoming. A rotary car dumper unloads each coal car without uncoupling it from the train in approximately two minutes. Two active coal storage silos hold 5,800 tons each allowing for a three-day supply at 100% load. Raised earthen berms protect the inactive coal storage providing 30 days of reserve. The berms reduce wind-borne coal dust emissions. Cooling water is provided by the closed-system, five billion gallon Hamilton Reservoir. Rawhide is equipped with state-of-the-art scrubbers as part of its air quality control measures. The plant operates below all state and federal emission standards.
